A free Grammarly alternative for AI replies and rewrites
Grammarly is great at underlining typos as you type. If what you actually want is to rewrite a draft or answer a message, without an account or a monthly AI quota, Reply Better AI does that for free.

Where Reply Better AI is the better fit
You want AI rewrites without a quota. Grammarly’s free plan gives 100 AI prompts a month and does not include full-sentence rewrites. Reply Better AI has no monthly cap, and full rewrites are the core feature.
You answer a lot of messages. Select the email or chat you’re replying to, pick a tone (match the thread, professional, friendly, concise), and get a reply you can insert with one click. You can also type what you want to say in any language.
You don’t want your writing on someone else’s server. With the on-device engine or your own Ollama / LM Studio server, your text never leaves your computer. There is no account, and the extension sends no analytics.
You want something that stays out of the way. The button only appears in real message boxes, not on every input on the page. There are no pop-ups or upsells inside the editor.
Where Grammarly is the better fit
Live typo and grammar checking. Grammarly underlines mistakes as you type. Reply Better AI works on demand: you click when you want a rewrite.
Google Docs, desktop apps and mobile. Grammarly works in Google Docs and has desktop and mobile apps. Reply Better AI is a browser extension and doesn’t support Google Docs yet.
Team features. If your company manages style guides and seats centrally, that is Grammarly’s territory.
How to try it
- Install Reply Better AI from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons.
- Click into any message box and start typing, or select a message you want to answer.
- Click the small button in the corner of the box and pick a style or tone.
On Chrome desktop it uses the free on-device engine automatically when available. Elsewhere, paste a free Groq key or connect a local model in settings.
Questions
Is Reply Better AI a full replacement for Grammarly?
Not for everyone. It does not underline spelling and grammar while you type, and it does not work in Google Docs yet. It focuses on rewriting drafts and writing replies. If you mainly need live typo checking, Grammarly's free plan still does that well, and you can use both.
Can I use both at the same time?
Yes. Reply Better AI only shows a small button in real message boxes, so it does not compete with Grammarly's underlines.
Is there a limit on how many rewrites I get?
No. There is no monthly or daily quota. With the on-device or local engines, it runs on your own computer. With Groq's free key, Groq's own rate limits apply (about 1,000 requests a day at the time of writing).
Does it send my text to your servers?
There are no servers. On-device and local engines keep your text on your computer. Cloud engines send only the text you select, directly to the provider you chose, with your own key.
